The Oceana County of Department of Veteran’s Affairs had what could only be described as a successful year in meeting its Mission and Goals in providing relief to wartime veterans in emergent need. Also, the Department was able to assist a number of veterans and their families in applying for VA benefits from the U. S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
Illustrated is the performance of the Department since 2013 and includes a Great Lakes Energy People’s Fund Grant to assist those veterans who would not otherwise qualify because of peacetime or non-conflict service. The Department is extremely gratified that Great Lakes Energy has made such a generous grant to the veterans of Oceana County.
The Department was established by the state legislature under Public Act 192, as amended, which merged Public Act 114 or the Soldier’s and Sailor’s Relief Act into one functioning county department of veterans affairs that is funded by a 1/10 mil non-vote millage and a 1/10 mil voted millage. Currently Oceana’s department only operates on 1/10 voted millage.
At the last Primary Election, the people of Oceana County voted 4,000 to 1,000 to re-authorize a 1/10 mil for four years. The Committee, veterans, and their families thank the citizens for their generosity. In so doing, the economy of the county is positively impacted, and the burdens that normally would befall county services and state welfare will be relieved as medical, in some cases dental, and psychiatric care is assumed by the Veterans Administration.
Medical Care is provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs by the Northern Expansion Unit (Rural Health Program) and vets may receive primary care on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at the Hart VFW from 0800 – 1500.
